Guten Tag meine Freunde,
Our first experience in Germany consisted of being stuck in a Düsseldorf airport for seven hours. It wasn't the best experience, but it was cool for the most part, aside from everything being priced way too high. We all thought we would get a flight to Berlin around either 3 or 5. However, we were woken up from a nap in a Starbucks lounge to news of a 4 hour train ride. After a long wait, we were finally on our way to Berlin. This was cool though because we were able to see a lot of scenery, and the German style of living. We also met a really cool guy named Fred. He and his friends got on the train at a stop in Hanover, about two hours after we got on. They were the definition of the granola life style, traveling around with backpacks and rice packed in tupperware containers. No smartphone, no social desires, just him and his friends, traveling the country. When we finally got home, my host family treated me to a great barbeque. I then went to sleep as soon as I could, for we had been awake for over 24 hours with little naps here and there. The next morning we started a really cool bike tour of the whole city. We were able to see cool sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, and we even got a cool lesson on Checkpoint Charlie and the division of Germany after World War 2. After seeing the whole city from the inside, our German hosts thought we should see it from a different perspective. They told us of a hill made from the rubble of the war, from which you can see the whole city on the skyline. At first we were skeptical. We ended up missing the bus and had to walk for about forty five minutes. We were all wondering if we would ever get there, or if they were lost. Finally we arrived at this trail that led up into the woods. Of course, the Germans were right! We made it, and it was awesome. We sat at the top of the hill talking, hanging out, and enjoying the amazing view of Berlin. Overall, it was a great beginning to our adventures in Berlin, with more to come.
